FATHER BERNARDO BOLDINI

ONE OF THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN READING TEXTS AND SOURCES RELATED TO FAITH IS THE PREJUDICE THAT THEY ARE “OUT OF TIME” AND NOT APPLICABLE TO TODAY’S NEEDS AND EVOLUTION. HOW CAN A TEXT WITH A MESSAGE CENTURIES OLD, IF NOT MILLENNIALS OLD, BE LIVED AND CONTEXTUALIZED TODAY?

1930 – 2019

Born in 1930 in Borgosatollo (Brescia), he began monastic life in the Trappist monastery (OCSO) of Tre Fontane, Rome, 01/12/1956, made his solemn profession in 1963, received priestly ordination on 10 August 1967.

He was a novice of the Venerable Father Romano Bottegal, whose beatification process is underway. He therefore had an exceptional teacher in terms of doctrine. mystical life – and today we can also add prophetic strength. Father Bernardo remained a faithful disciple of Father Romano all his life, that is, of this man of great spiritual quality who left his community after a long preparation, made up of service to the community first and of times of hermit life lived by the major superiors, but certainly with great disappointment within the enclosure, then finally released, with the permission of his community. For this reason he has long been suspected of disobedience and rebellion; until the fury of his sanctity, after his premature and holy death, forced him to review his positions.

Father Bernardo remained for more than 20 years in this community full of problems, which came above all from his difficult position in the city of Rome, which had always exposed it to attempts at robbery from various quarters. The superiors, forced to face these difficulties, could not dedicate themselves sufficiently to the care of the community, a particularly challenging and difficult aspect for everyone in our times of transition.

Father Bernardo subsequently carried out the duties of Master of Novices, Prior and Superior. We should also know better the story of Dom Domenico Turco, a fine figure of Abbot of the Tre Fontane, a man of great culture, magnanimity and courtesy. Great friend of Madre Pia, Abbess of female Trappist monastery of Grottaferrata, recognized its greatness and was faithful to this friendship until his death, not caring about the slander of so many mean and envious people.

Financier of the construction of Vitorchiano first and then of Valserena (the latter was the foundation dreamed of for so long by Madre Pia) and benefactor of many from the Little Sisters, until today hosted on the grounds of the Tre Fontane, to a number of other religious families. He was then the financier of that too imposing work of the Order which was the Generalate and reception house for the students of Monte Cistello. He was finally accused, in a very difficult time of expropriations by the state, of having squandered the assets of the Tre Fontane, he had to resign and then lived as a monk in humility and silence, dedicated to his beautiful translations of Saint Bernard.

Father Bernardo told me that it was instead the French Apostolic Administrator appointed after him and always considered the savior of the situation who seriously compromised the assets, canceling wise and prudent choices of Don Domenico which had secured a large part of the capital.

Father Bernardo Boldini, appointed superior, took up this very difficult legacy and worked for some years (1974-1977) day and night to put the administrative and financial situation back in order, seriously exhausting his strength. Taking advantage of the circumstance, his cloistered prior, also a monk sent from the monastery of another town probably to remove him, worked within the community to turn the brothers against the superior; These things were told to me by Father Bernardo himself to explain to me how, having finished his task and now without strength, he had taken refuge in the Annex House of Boschi which in the meantime had been created since 1972 in view of a possible transfer of the community, by him himself, by Don Domenico Turco who was from the area and had taken care of the research of the place and by some other brothers. After the break spent as superior of the Tre Fontane I returned definitively in 1977. The history of the small nucleus and its growth until it became an independent monastery can be found on the Community website: https://monasteromadonnaunioneboschi.it/

These three figures we have mentioned, Father Romano, Don Domenico, Father Bernardo, express, together with many others, the two souls of the Tre Fontane: on the one hand a strongly contemplative spirit, which pushed people to flee from Rome to seek solitude and an environment more suited to the search for God; on the other hand, Rome has a loyalty to the monastic presence, a presence desired by the Fathers on the site of the martyrdom of Saint Paul and many other Christians; presence started by the oriental monks, continued by Saint Bernard and almost uninterrupted until today. Presence in a place strongly loved by the monks: presence strongly appreciated by Pius XII and Paul VI, who had always opposed the idea of a transfer. Let's not forget that in the 1950s the Madonna appeared on land owned by the monastery and with public access, to Bruno Comacchiola and his three children, as the Virgin of Revelation. The Chapel of Our Lady of Revelation was established in the cave of these apparitions, whose messages were linked to those of Fatima and other apparitions. Although never officially recognised, these apparitions have determined, to this day, a strong movement of popular prayer, particularly attentive to prophetic revelations also regarding the future of the Roman Church.

How could the monks abandon this field of spiritual struggle where the official prayer in the Abbey Church, the celebrations of the Eucharist and the Divine Office, the welcome of pilgrims in the places of martyrdom, the confessions and the spiritual conversation combine with the piety of people and support the research of many, ecclesiastics, religious, lay people, still attracted by the two thousand year old sanctity of this place? But how monks will remain monks without a spiritual renewal appropriate to our time!

This is the profound question that has always troubled our Father Bernardo. Personally, despite the difficulties of understanding between the two communities, when the Tre Fontane felt they did not have the strength to also support Boschi and hoped for the return of the brothers, I have always felt how the Tre Fontane were the deep root that gave consistency to Boschi, and how Boschi represented the renewal of the Tre Fontane, as necessary as it was little understood within.

When the first meeting of Italian male and female trainers was held in Valserena in 1982, Don Domenico Turco was present as father master of the Tre Fontane, later replaced by Father Emanuele, and Father Bernardo represented Boschi, of whom he was superior and trainer. At that time, while Don Domenico first and Father Emanuele then positioned themselves as the sons and scholars of Saint Bernard, Father Bernardo Boldini appeared rather as a restless researcher and an attentive listener to all the new ferments of culture and society. In those years he explored Freud's thought in a very personal way; but this research, long and tiring, should not deceive the theological solidity of his personal approach, always strongly nourished by Scripture, the Liturgy, the fathers and the ecclesial Magisterium. But he never gave up his passionate, generous, tiring anthropological research to extricate the authentic image of man from the frozen formalism of the clericalism of that time and from the bottlenecks of even more frozen Trappist customs. The passionate question: "Who is man? How can he grow and become more and more himself in the relationship with God? It was common to us. Father Ber's research
