La notte oscura dell'anima

THE DARK NIGHT

The dark night of the soul

At first reading, it might seem like a reading for a few, not easy, mainly dedicated to those who have made a very specific choice in their lives, dedicated to the spirit, to faith.

But if we can set aside preconceptions and personal judgments, we cannot fail to notice that the described experience belongs to each of us. In different ways, different depending on our social, personal context, but it describes very well the state of mind that is present in each of us today.

An inner state worn out by a loss of relationship between what we are today and what we should be according to the project of man-God.

Daily, we try to ignore this separation, we live in a context where everything leads us to ignore who we really are and what we really need. As much as we strive, we always have this sense of incompleteness, of hunger and thirst. Inexorably, there always comes a moment in life when we can no longer silence this inner voice.

ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS
THE DARK NIGHT
PROLOGUE TO THE READER

In this book, the stanzas that I intend to explain are first presented. Subsequently, each stanza will be explained individually, placed before its commentary; then the individual verses will be explained, always cited first. In the first two stanzas, the effects of the two spiritual purifications are described, respectively of the sensitive and spiritual parts of man. In the other six, the different and marvelous effects of spiritual enlightenment and the union of love with God are illustrated.

The soul always receives impressions, stimuli from the world and from the SELF, but it is not immediately set in motion by these; its positions come from the heart…
